The Fourier Cut
Athenodin's proprietary approach to cutting rare coloured gemstones — a methodology of analysis, precision and restraint applied to one crystal at a time.
Most coloured stones are cut to preserve weight. The Fourier Cut begins from a different question: what is this particular crystal capable of, optically, if weight is no longer the only measure of success?
The method is a discipline rather than a formula. Each crystal is analysed before any facet is placed, a plan is written down with expected outcomes, and the finished gem is measured against that plan. Nothing is claimed that the record cannot support.
The result is a smaller number of gemstones, cut more slowly, with a written account of why each decision was taken.

Principles
Individual crystal analysis
Every rough crystal is studied on its own terms — dimensions and weight, refractive index and specific gravity, crystal orientation and optical axis, colour zoning and internal features. The cut follows the material; the material is never forced into a template.
Optical performance
The design objective is measured light return: how light enters, travels and exits the finished gem. Pavilion angles and facet placement are chosen for the species and for that individual crystal, not from a generic chart.
Symmetry and proportion
Meet-point precision, facet alignment and balanced proportion are held to a tighter tolerance than commercial cutting requires. Symmetry is treated as a structural discipline, not a finishing detail.
Colour optimisation
Orientation and depth are used to place colour where the eye reads it — deepening a pale zone, opening an over-saturated one, and working with zoning instead of hiding it.
Material preservation
Rare rough is finite. Retention is planned deliberately against optical outcome, and every plan records expected against final weight so the trade-off is documented rather than assumed.
Documented outcome
Each cut is recorded in the workbench: rough analysis, proposed cut, expected results, final measurements, weight retention and before-and-after comparison. Published records appear on the gemstone's profile.

Receipt
Rough is weighed, measured, photographed and, where useful, scanned.

Analysis
Species properties, orientation, optical axis, zoning and inclusions are mapped.

Plan
A proposed cut is drafted with expected weight, dimensions, colour and light behaviour.

Cutting
The plan is executed by hand with staged checks against the design.

Verification
Final measurements, symmetry, polish and light performance are recorded.

Publication
Selected records are published to the gemstone profile and Gem Passport.
